I love dogs so I thought I would compile a list of my Top Ten Dog Breeds. Taking into account temperament and appearance here are my ten favourite breeds.
#10 Doberman Pinscher
Group: Working
Colours: Black/tan, brown/tan, blue/tan, fawn/tan
Size: Large
Average Weight: 35kg
Reasoning: The epitome of strength, the Doberman is a fiercely loyal and brave companion. The coat colours are bold and beautiful and the chiselled face is as stunning as it is fearful.
#9 Cairn Terrier
Group: Terrier
Colours: Any except white
Size: Small
Average Weight: 7kg
Reasoning: The Cairn is a fun-loving, energetic breed which despite its small size has a big attitude. The shaggy fur and petite face are ever-so cute.
#8 Pug
Group: Toy
Colours: Fawn with black muzzle
Size: Small
Average Weight: 8kg
Reasoning: Pugs are docile clowns with good temperaments - a perfect family pet. There is nothing cuter than seeing that curled tail and chubby rear waddling along.
#7 Greyhound
Group: Hound
Colours: Any
Size: Large
Average Weight: 35kg
Reasoning: The Greyhound is a strong, intelligent dog that forms a close bond with its owner. While it is breathtaking to see at Greyhound sprint, it is their even temperament that makes them so endearing.
#6 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Group: Toy
Colours: Red/white, red, black/tan, black/white/tan
Size: Small
Average Weight: 8kg
Reasoning: This spaniel has all the energy and fizz of its springer cousin but at a manageable size! King Charles spaniels are pudgy balls of fluff and who could resist that snub nose??
#5 Vizsla
Group: Gundog
Colours: Rust
Size: Medium
Average Weight: 25kg
Reasoning: The Vizsla is an easily-trained, calm and affectionate friend. The rusty tone is exquisite, the physique perfectly formed and the doe eyes are adorable.
#4 Great Pyrenee
Group: Working
Colours: White
Size: Giant
Average Weight: 45kg
Reasoning: The biggest dog on the list, the Pyrenee is the ultimate gentle giant; it is capable of relentless protection and endless cuddles alike. The bright-white bushy coat is luxurious to say the least.
#3 Dachshund
Group: Hound
Colours: Any
Size: Small
Average Weight: 5kg
Reasoning: That face...need I say more? Dachshunds are among the cutest dogs in the world, but are loved for their personalities also. They are playful, gentle and loveable.
#2 German Shepherd
Group: Herding
Colours: Usually white/black/tan
Size: Large
Average Weight: 35kg
Reasoning: One of the most popular breeds, the German Shepherd evokes fear and adoration alike. Let's not forget these dogs make great police and guard dogs and for good reason; but it is also in the German Shepherd nature to be gentle, childlike teddy bears. For me there are few dogs that can match the sheer power and masculinity of this dog.
#1 Labrador Retriever
Group: Gundog
Colours: Black, yellow, chocolate, fox red
Size: Large
Average Weight: 30kg
Reasoning: Okay so I may be biased...The pup on the left is my Mum's dog, Harvey, at a few months old. Besides this it is my opinion that there is no sweeter, more loving, brilliant dog breed out there. A Labrador is always pleased to see you and truly makes you smile even after the worst of days. 'Man's best friend' has never been more apt; they are hearing dogs, guide dogs, rescue dogs and our companions at the same time. Loyalty is a word that crops up when talking about labs and rightly so - these dogs will defend you 'till the end and spend every day of their lives trying to make you happy. Whilst undeniably a beautiful dog (the chubby body, big wagging tail and oversized ears) I believe the dog's personality shines through and is what makes it so beautiful - those eyes don't lie.
